For the silicon wafer to become a usable semiconductor, it passes through several departments. The processing takes on average between 5 to 9 weeks. However, the process is not linear. Here, you can see what we are all about. This is, or rather will be, our product. The basis for our starting material is sand. We work with silicon disks called wafers. By various chemical and physical processes, these wafers ultimately become state-of-the-art technology. The name "wafer" comes from the fact that at the end of processing, the pattern on the wafers resembles the appearance of a wafer.

Now, you are in the section of wet chemistry. Here, the wafers are cleaned for instance by chemical baths, because organic residue (such as paint residue or particles) or metallic residue (such as aluminum) can build up on the wafer surface. In most cases, the etching of the layer only amounts to a few nanometers. In wet chemistry, only chemical etching is used, either acids or bases. Examples are:
Acids:

The Stangl is a fully automated etching system. The wafers are placed on the corresponding fixtures of the drawer. Then, the etching process begins in the corresponding tank with the respective acid or caustic solution. After the etching process is completed, the wafers are placed in a rinsing basin. DI water (deionized water) is used to interrupt the etching process in these basins. These rinsing cycles are repeated up to 5 times. After rinsing, the wafers are dried.

The structures of semiconductors can be about 50 times thinner than a human hair. This makes them highly sensitive. The smallest dirt particles can destroy these tiny circuits. You can see a size comparison of different particles here.

This is where the actual backside metallization happens. Various metals (e.g. titanium, nickel, silver) are vaporized in a high vacuum. These vapors rise to the top and thus reach the backsides of the wafers.

To protect against residual particles, there is a down-flow in the cleanroom. This is a draft of air that continuously pushes the air down from above, thus taking particles with it. In the normal air that surrounds us, there are about 100,000 particles per cubic foot. In the “Class 1” cleanroom, a maximum of one particle per cubic foot is allowed. As a comparison, this is roughly equivalent to one cherry pit in the entire Lake Constance.

With this machine, the taper is being removed. Afterwards, the wafers get once again cleaned of possible adhesive residue or other impurities. This is done with, for instance, isopropanol.

To protect against residual particles, there is a down-flow in the cleanroom. This is a draft of air that continuously pushes the air down from above, thus taking particles with it. In the normal air that surrounds us, there are about 100,000 particles per cubic foot. In the “Class 1” cleanroom, a maximum of one particle per cubic foot is allowed.
